Picture a full trolley at the till and your Blue Light Card in your hand. No big UK supermarket will take money off when you show it.

The savings come through discounted Shopping Cards instead, bought in the Blue Light Card app before you shop. M&S publishes the best rate, at 6% off. Morrisons, Iceland and Waitrose sit at 3%.

Nine Chains Sell Shopping Cards
Nine supermarket and discount chains accept Blue Light Card through discounted Shopping Cards. Each one is the shop’s own gift card, sold to members below face value, so the saving is built in before you reach the till.

Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Asda sell their cards below face value too, but Blue Light Card doesn’t print those rates on its public pages. You’ll see the figure in your account before you pay, so compare it with the 3% to 6% chains.
Three big names are missing. Aldi and Lidl aren’t in Blue Light Card’s A to Z of brands and have no offer page there. Blue Light Card also says there’s no Costco discount code at the moment, so older guides quoting Costco vouchers are out of date.

The Big Four All Use Cards
Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda and Morrisons all work the same way. You buy the card in your Blue Light Card account first, then pay with it like any other gift card.
Tesco Cards Work In Store Only
Tesco doesn’t issue a member code. Its Shopping Card covers groceries, F&F clothing and homeware, but Blue Light Card says it can only be used in store, so it won’t work on an online order.
Hand the card over at the till before the transaction is processed. It’s only a way to pay, so you can still scan your Clubcard and collect points on the same shop. Any balance left over stays on the card for next time, subject to its expiry date.
Sainsbury’s Adds an Online Code
Sainsbury’s gives members two options. A discount code takes money off your first online grocery order, and it can’t be combined with other vouchers or promotions.
After that, the Sainsbury’s Shopping Card covers the main grocery and clothing range. Blue Light Card’s pages disagree on whether it works online, so plan to spend it in store, where you can still scan your Nectar card.
The card won’t pay for fuel, prescriptions, PayPoint products, concessions, delivery charges or tobacco kiosk items. Stamps, gift cards, top-ups, lottery tickets and currency exchange are out too.
Asda Covers George Clothing
Asda has no code or till discount for members. The saving comes from an Asda Shopping Card, and the balance works across groceries, household essentials and George clothing, which helps with school uniform.
Blue Light Card gives mixed answers on online use, so treat it as an in-store card. Whether you also earn Asda Rewards on the same shop depends on Asda’s own terms. Our Asda Blue Light Card guide covers the chain in more detail.
Morrisons Sits at 3%
Morrisons is the one big four chain with a published rate. Members save 3% on Morrisons gift cards, and Blue Light Card’s FAQ says they work in store only.
Blue Light Card has run a 10% Friday offer at Morrisons before, with a fresh code each Friday for in-store shops of £40 or more. It isn’t listed now, so the 3% card is the saving to plan around.
Seven More Chains on the Card
Away from the big four, several chains publish better rates, and two of them let you spend the card online.
M&S Leads at 6%
M&S has the best published rate of any supermarket on the card. Members save 6% on M&S gift cards, which work online and in store across food, clothing, homeware and beauty.
Waitrose at 3% Online or In Store
Waitrose Shopping Cards save 3% and can be spent online or in store, subject to Waitrose’s terms at the time. The digital card arrives as soon as you buy it.
Iceland Codes for Online Orders
Iceland splits its offer in two. The Iceland gift card saves 3% in store, while member codes cover online orders only.
Some codes are single use for new online customers, and others work across several orders for returning ones. Check the terms on your code before a big freezer shop.
B&M and Farmfoods In Store
B&M’s Shopping Card saves 5% and works in B&M stores only, across groceries, home, garden, toys and seasonal ranges.
Farmfoods also sells Shopping Cards for use in store, though the rate isn’t public. You can use up to 10 cards in one transaction, and each card lasts a year from the day you buy it.
Co-op Food and Ocado Codes
Co-op Food and Ocado work through discount codes rather than cards, and both are for online orders only. Ocado has no shops, and the Co-op Food code won’t work at the till. Neither public page shows the rate, so check it in your account.
A £100 Shop Saves £3 to £6
Take a £100 weekly shop. A 3% card at Morrisons, Iceland or Waitrose saves £3, B&M’s 5% card saves £5 and the M&S card saves £6.

Pet food doesn’t have to go in the supermarket trolley. Pets at Home takes Blue Light Card as a code on online orders, though the rate only shows after you log in.
Loading a card takes a couple of minutes.
- Log in to the Blue Light Card app or website and search for the supermarket.
- Open its offer page and choose the Shopping Card.
- Pick a value close to what you’ll spend, then pay the member price.
- Keep the card ready in your account on your phone.
- Show it at the till before the cashier processes the payment, or enter it at checkout where the chain takes it online.
