Say you finish a night shift, pull into a McDonald’s drive-thru and hold up your Blue Light Card. Nothing comes off the bill, because McDonald’s isn’t a Blue Light Card partner.

NHS staff had their own deal for a while. McDonald’s ran a 20% NHS discount in its app from 1 January to 30 June 2026. By 24 October 2026, no new dates had been published.
Until it comes back, the app’s rewards and deals are the way to pay less. If you’d rather use your card, Burger King takes 20% off.
1 Point for Every Penny
McDonald’s own app is where the savings are right now. These four steps cost nothing and work at participating restaurants.
- Join MyMcDonald’s Rewards in the app. You earn 1 point for every penny you spend, and the first reward comes at 2,000 points.
- Collect the welcome bonus. McDonald’s adds 1,000 bonus points to your first order, so that first reward arrives sooner.
- Check the Offers section before you pay. The current members’ deals run until 1 November 2026, with a minimum spend and one use a day.
- Compare the Meal Deal Plus on the offers page. It’s a main, a side, a drink and one of six bonus sides for £5.59.
At a kiosk, the front counter or the drive-thru, give the code from the app’s Code section before you order. Points can’t be added afterwards, and they now expire after six full calendar months.
Delivery counts too. You earn points on McDelivery ordered in the McDonald’s app, but not on orders placed through Just Eat or Uber Eats.
Rewards is open to over-18s, and McDonald’s can change the rewards menu at any time. This is what the points bought on 24 October 2026.
Not on the Blue Light Card List
McDonald’s isn’t in Blue Light Card’s A to Z brand directory, and its food and dining page lists no McDonald’s offer. Burger King and KFC are both on it.
That’s been the pattern for years. McDonald’s help page on NHS discounts, dated 21 May 2018, says some UK restaurants do offer one, but only at the discretion of individual franchisees. Franchisees run almost 70% of its restaurants.
The page is old, so treat it as a reason to ask politely, not a promise. A local restaurant might help, but there’s no national Blue Light Card or NHS discount you can count on at the counter.
NHS 20% Ran to 30 June 2026
NHS staff had a better route for the first half of 2026. McDonald’s NHS offer terms gave 20% off all items in the app, and the offer ran until 30 June 2026.
You had to be 16 or over, signed in to the app, and an active NHS employee with an NHS email address. Orders went through the Offers section and were collected the same day, once a week at most.
The 20% couldn’t be combined with other offers, and a second order on the same day was full price. Twelve restaurants were left out too, including Victoria Station, Waterloo Station and Westfield Stratford.
It was tied to an NHS job and an NHS email, so police, fire, teaching and care staff couldn’t use it at all.
On 24 October 2026 the terms page still showed the January to June dates, and the offers page didn’t mention an NHS deal. McDonald’s has run NHS offers in bursts before, including a free Chicken Legend in July 2021 and a free Choco Fudge Latte from 3 November to 1 December 2021, so it may return.
If it does, setting up is simple. Register the app with your NHS email and click the verification link on the same phone. Then allow up to 72 hours for the offer to appear, as McDonald’s customer services explains. Already registered with a personal email? Sign out and register again with your NHS address.

20% Off at Burger King Instead
If you want your card to do the work, Burger King is the nearest swap. Blue Light Card lists 20% off at Burger King and 9% off at KFC.
Burger King’s own help page says you can show your card at the front counter or link your membership in the BK app. It’s a franchise business, though, and it warns that a few franchisees don’t accept offers.
Where it is accepted, Burger King says offers work at the front counter, drive-thru, kiosk and Click and Collect. A late stop at the drive-thru still counts.

£20 After a Night Shift
Take a £20 order after a late finish. This is what it costs at each chain on 24 October 2026.

At McDonald’s today you pay the full £20, but you earn 2,000 points, enough for small fries or a medium soft drink next time. McDonald’s values 2,000 points at £2 when you donate them to charity instead, so that’s about 10% back, paid in food. Only food and drink earn points, so delivery fees and the bag charge don’t count.
Burger King’s 20% is worth more. Four £20 orders a month would save £16 there, more than three times the £4.99 that a Blue Light Card costs for two years.
McDonald’s deals come and go, so check both apps before you order. And keep your NHS email in the McDonald’s app, in case the 20% comes back.
