Asda gives Blue Light Card members no till discount and no code. Instead, you buy a discounted Asda Shopping Card in the app and pay with it like a gift card.
Blue Light Guide is an independent guide and isn’t affiliated with Blue Light Card Ltd. For your account, verification or payments, use the official Blue Light Card website or app.
Blue Light Card doesn’t publish the Asda rate. It only shows in the app or your online account, just before you pay.
Each 1% is worth £1.12 on an average weekly shop, so check the rate before you buy. We checked the offer and its rules on 24 October 2026.
Buy Once and Top Up Weekly
Buying the card takes a few minutes, and Blue Light Card says it’s ready to use straight away.
- Log in to the Blue Light Card app or website and search for Asda.
- Open the Asda offer and choose the Shopping Card option.
- Pick a value, then check the member price before you pay.
- Pay with a UK debit or credit card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. American Express, prepaid and business cards are refused.
- Open the card in your Wallet when you reach the shop.
- Show it at the till before the cashier processes the payment.
- Next week, press Top Up on the same card rather than buying a new one.
Asda is one of nine retailers on Blue Light Card’s top up list. Top ups only work on cards bought from 27 May 2026, and only once you’ve viewed the card. Any limit on the amount shows when you top up.
Each top up resets the card’s expiry date, and top ups can’t be refunded. The card itself can be, within 14 days of purchase, but only if you haven’t opened it in your Wallet. Blue Light Card’s refund page says approved refunds can take 5 to 10 days to reach your bank.
Our guide to using the Blue Light Card app shows where the Wallet sits.
Does Asda Take Blue Light Card?
Not as a discount card. Showing it at an Asda checkout takes nothing off. Blue Light Card’s Asda page says members save with discounted Shopping Cards rather than codes.

It used to be simpler. Until May 2023, members got 10% off in Asda stores by showing the card at the checkout. Then the offer moved into the Asda Rewards app as 10% back in your Cashpot.
That Cashpot offer isn’t listed any more. Blue Light Card’s Asda pages now list Shopping Cards and nothing else, and we found no NHS or key worker discount run by Asda itself. NHS staff do have one other route, covered further down.
Asda isn’t alone. No big supermarket takes money off for the card at the till now. Our list of shops that don’t accept Blue Light Card covers chains with no offer at all, such as Aldi and Lidl.
Each 1% Saves £1.12 a Week
Without a published rate, the useful figure is what each 1% is worth. Blue Light Card’s member survey from February 2025 puts the average weekly grocery spend at £112. On that shop, each 1% of card discount saves £1.12.

| Card rate | Saving on £112 | Over 52 weeks |
|---|---|---|
| 1% | £1.12 | £58.24 |
| 2% | £2.24 | £116.48 |
| 3% | £3.36 | £174.72 |
| 4% | £4.48 | £232.96 |
| 5% | £5.60 | £291.20 |
Check the rate in the app, then read across. Say your card shows 3%. A £112 shop would then cost you £108.64, and a year of weekly shops saves about £175.
Blue Light Card’s own grocery estimate, £200 a year, uses 3.5% at selected grocers. It doesn’t name them, so don’t assume Asda pays that rate.
Smaller shops scale down the same way. On a £60 shop, each 1% is worth 60p a week, or £31.20 over a year.
Membership costs £4.99 for two years, as our guide to the cost explains. At 1% off, £499 of Asda shopping covers it. At 3%, about £166 does.
George Counts but Petrol Doesn’t
Blue Light Card says the balance works across the full Asda range, including groceries, household essentials and George clothing. So one card can cover a school uniform trip as well as the weekly shop. Blue Light Card also sells a separate George Shopping Card.
There are exceptions. Asda’s gift card terms, as shown on Health Service Discounts, rule out petrol stations and Asda cafés. Concession stores, tobacco, e-cigarettes, lottery products, phone top-ups, stamps, delivery passes, other gift cards and first stage baby milk are off the list too.
Blue Light Card also tells members to check the offer terms in their account for any exclusions.

Online use is less certain. Two Blue Light Card pages say the card works online, and Asda’s terms allow gift cards at groceries.asda.com and george.com. But the FAQ answer on Blue Light Card’s Asda gift card page only mentions stores.

Plan to spend it at the till, then, and check the card in your Wallet before you rely on it for a delivery order.
The same FAQ covers Asda Rewards. The card counts as a payment method, and whether you also earn Asda Rewards on that shop depends on Asda’s current terms.
Any balance left over stays on the card for your next shop. Keep an eye on the expiry date in your Wallet, because an expired card can’t be used or refunded.
NHS Staff Get 2% Off Asda
NHS and healthcare staff have a second route with a published rate. Health Service Discounts, a free scheme, lists 2% off Asda gift cards. It also offers 2.5% cashback at Asda through its ode cashback card.

The scheme’s Asda gift cards can be bought to the penny, but purchases are non-refundable. The ode card is a prepaid Visa that you top up before you shop. Health Service Discounts’ FAQ lists a £4.99 sign-up fee and £2.99 a year for it, though its Asda offer page calls the card free.
Blue Light Card refuses prepaid cards for Shopping Card payments, so you can’t buy the Asda card with an ode card. The same scheme also has a 15% NHS code for Asda Photo prints and gifts, online only.

Compare the rates before a big shop. If your Blue Light Card rate beats 2%, use it. If it doesn’t, the free scheme’s gift card saves more.
Asda isn’t the only chain to keep its rate behind a login. Tesco and Sainsbury’s do the same, while M&S cards save 6% and Morrisons cards 3%. Our supermarket comparison covers each chain, and the full discounts list shows every category on the card.
