Costa, Starbucks and Subway Blue Light Card Discounts

Only one of these chains takes your Blue Light Card at the till. Starbucks gives 10% off your bill when you show the card. Costa’s saving comes through an 8% gift card that you buy first.

Blue Light Guide is an independent guide and isn’t affiliated with Blue Light Card Ltd. For your account, verification or payments, use the official Blue Light Card website or app.

Subway has no Blue Light Card offer at all, although its own rewards app gives 10% back.

We checked every rate below on 24 October 2026, including a Costa catch in Northern Ireland.

10% at Starbucks and 8% at Costa

The three chains work in three different ways. If you use more than one, Starbucks needs no planning, while Costa rewards a little preparation.

Rates can change, so check the offer in the Blue Light Card app before you top up a gift card.

Starbucks Takes 10% at the Till

Starbucks is the simplest of the three. Blue Light Card’s Starbucks page says members get 10% off their bill in participating stores, with no code to enter.

Show your Blue Light Card when you order and before you pay. The saving covers coffees, iced drinks, teas and selected food, subject to the current terms. It’s open to every member, from NHS staff and teachers to police, social care workers and the armed forces, plus people retired from those jobs.

The word to watch is participating. Blue Light Card only promises the 10% in participating stores and keeps the current details in your account, so check there before you rely on it somewhere new.

Regulars have a second option. A Starbucks gift card costs 9.5% less than face value and arrives digitally straight away. You show it at the till before the payment goes through. Blue Light Card doesn’t say whether the 10% can be added on the same order, so ask the barista first.

Costa Saves 8% on a Gift Card

Costa works differently, and this is where people get caught out. Blue Light Card doesn’t list a till discount or a code for Costa. Its offer is a Costa gift card at 8% below face value, bought through your account before you go.

Once you’ve bought it, you can pay with the balance at the till or add the card to the Costa Coffee Club app. It covers the whole menu, from flat whites and cold drinks to toasties and cakes. Any money left on the card stays there for your next visit.

If you searched for a Costa NHS discount, this is it. We couldn’t find a separate NHS offer from Costa on 24 October 2026, so NHS staff use the same 8% gift card as other Blue Light Card members.

Five Steps to a Cheaper Flat White

Buying the Costa card is quick, in the Blue Light Card app or on its website.

  1. Log in to your Blue Light Card account and search for Costa Coffee.
  2. Open the Costa Coffee offer page and pick the Shopping Card.
  3. Choose the value you want and pay the member price.
  4. Add the card to the Costa Coffee Club app, or keep the details for the till.
  5. Pay with the balance when you order.

Load roughly what you’ll spend in a few weeks rather than a big lump. Money sitting on a gift card can’t be spent anywhere else.

Starbucks needs none of this for its 10%. You only buy something first if you choose the gift card. Shopping Cards for other brands work the same way, as our guide to using your Blue Light Card explains.

Does Subway Take Blue Light Card?

No. Subway has no Blue Light Card offer. It’s missing from Blue Light Card’s A to Z of brands, where Starbucks is listed, and there’s no Subway offer page.

We couldn’t find an NHS discount on Subway’s UK website either. What it does have is Subway Rewards, which gives 10% back in Subway Cash on every qualifying purchase.

That isn’t money off at the till. The 10% comes back as credit for a later order, but for a regular Subway lunch it’s still worth having.

If you’d rather use your Blue Light Card, quick food chains on its list include Burger King at 20% off, KFC at 9% and Wasabi at 10% off the total bill.

No Costa Card in Northern Ireland

The Costa gift card has one hard limit. Blue Light Card’s FAQ says the Costa eGift can’t be used in Northern Ireland or in stores abroad. It only works in participating stores in England, Scotland and Wales.

So if you live or work in Northern Ireland, the Costa card isn’t for you. Blue Light Card doesn’t mention the same limit for Starbucks, but the 10% still depends on the store taking part.

Gift card balances have rules too. Blue Light Card says a Starbucks card balance is subject to the card’s expiry date and Starbucks’s terms, so spend it rather than saving it for months.

£104 Saved on £20 a Week

A 10% saving on one coffee is small, so it helps to look at a whole year. Say you spend £20 a week on coffee and snacks.

Bar chart of yearly savings on £20 a week: £104 with the Starbucks till discount, £98.80 with the Starbucks gift card and £83.20 with the Costa gift card

At Starbucks, the till discount saves £2 a week, or £104 over 52 weeks. The 9.5% gift card would save £98.80, and Costa’s 8% card £83.20 on the same spend. Halve the spend to £10 a week and the savings halve too, to £52 at the Starbucks till and £41.60 with the Costa card.

Any of those covers the £4.99 membership many times over, and that fee lasts two years. If coffee is only an occasional treat, bigger savings sit elsewhere, such as 20% off food at Wagamama and Prezzo in our restaurant discounts list.
