Blue Light Card for Student Nurses and Medics

Can student nurses or medical students get a Blue Light Card? Not as students. Blue Light Card has no student category, so you need an eligible job or volunteer role of your own.

Blue Light Guide is an independent guide and isn’t affiliated with Blue Light Card Ltd. For your account, verification or payments, use the official Blue Light Card website or app.

Part-time roles can get you in. Paid bank shifts as a healthcare assistant qualify, and so does a care home job or St John Ambulance volunteering. Membership then costs £4.99 for two years.

If you only study for now, free schemes fit better. Health Service Discounts takes healthcare students, and UNiDAYS covers college and university students.

No Student Option in the Checker

Blue Light Card’s eligibility checker starts by asking for your employment status. The only choices are employed, retired and volunteer. There’s no student option, and the next step asks which organisation you work in, not what you study.

Its full eligibility list is just as clear. If you don’t fall under one of its categories, you aren’t eligible at this time. When we checked on 24 October 2026, students weren’t mentioned anywhere on the list or in the help centre.

You may read that a student ID badge from your placement trust is enough. Blue Light Card’s current pages don’t say that. Its NHS rules ask for documents that prove your current employment, and its terms let it remove any member found breaching the eligibility criteria.

Our eligibility guide lists the groups that do qualify, from NHS staff to foster carers.

Your Placement Versus a Payslip

What counts is a role you hold alongside your course. Here’s how the common student situations compare.

Your situationCan joinProof to upload
Course and placements onlyNoNone, as students have no category
Paid NHS bank or HCA workYes, as NHS staffNHS payslip, work ID or work email
Nursing or paramedic apprenticeYes, if the NHS employs youPayslip or work ID from your employer
Part-time care home jobYes, in any rolePayslip, ID badge or employer letter
St John Ambulance volunteerYes, as a volunteerIts ID card or email
NHS hospital volunteerMaybe, with accepted IDAsk support which ID counts

Paid work outside the NHS can count too. Blue Light Card accepts anyone who works in a care home, in any role, and care home volunteers as well. Our guide for carers covers the other care jobs that qualify.

Pharmacy work counts as well. At Boots or Superdrug, you’ll need a contract confirming a pharmacy role, plus a work ID or a recent payslip.

Bank Shifts Make You NHS Staff

Student nurses and midwives have the clearest route. If you work paid bank shifts as a healthcare assistant for an NHS trust, you count as NHS staff, and Blue Light Card’s NHS rules apply to you.

The help centre accepts a work ID card or NHS Smart Card showing your name and trust. It also takes a payslip naming your NHS employer or partner organisation. An NHS work email is quickest, because it can verify you straight away.

Timing matters if you only work the odd shift. The payslip must be dated within the last 3 months, so apply soon after a payday. Through a private agency, your payslip may not show an NHS employer, which is what Blue Light Card asks to see.

Membership lasts two years. At renewal you confirm your job details again, and by then you may be in your first qualified post.

Midwifery students follow exactly the same rules. A labour ward placement on its own won’t do, but paid bank work will.

Upload Proof Then Pay £4.99

Once you have a qualifying role, the application works as it does for anyone else. Create an account on Blue Light Card’s website, choose your service and pick your trust or organisation from the list.

Then verify. An NHS or ambulance service work email can confirm you instantly. Otherwise, upload your payslip or ID badge, with any personal details the team doesn’t need covered or edited out.

Checklist showing an NHS payslip from the last 3 months, an NHS work ID or Smart Card, an NHS work email and a St John Ambulance ID card prove your role, while a student ID card or university enrolment letter only proves you study

Next, pay £4.99 for two years. Blue Light Card says checks usually take 1 to 3 working days, though its homepage says typically within 7 days. Once you’re approved, the digital card is usually ready within an hour, and the plastic card is posted within 3 to 5 working days.

Volunteers apply the same way, using the ID their organisation gives them. Our application walkthrough goes through each step.

Paramedic Apprentices Earn a Wage

Student paramedics on a university course are in the same position as student nurses. The course and its ambulance placements don’t count, but paid work with an ambulance service does.

Degree apprentices are in a better spot. Skills England lists a paramedic apprenticeship approved for delivery, and GOV.UK says an apprentice is an employee earning a wage. If an ambulance service employs you, you apply under Ambulance Service like the rest of its staff.

Blue Light Card’s ambulance rules accept a work ID card or a payslip from the last 3 months. A work email from an ambulance service, the NHS or St John Ambulance is the fastest route.

The same applies to nursing degree apprentices employed by an NHS trust. They apply as NHS staff.

Can Medical Students Get a Card?

Not for studying medicine. A clinical placement doesn’t make you NHS staff, so it gives you nothing Blue Light Card can verify.

Paid work changes that. If you work bank shifts as a healthcare assistant alongside your degree, your NHS payslip counts exactly as it does for a student nurse.

Volunteering is the other way in. St John Ambulance has over 20 student First Aid Societies at universities, and many have a Student Volunteering Group. Blue Light Card names St John Ambulance among the volunteer roles it accepts, with its ID card or email address as proof.

Hospital volunteering can count too. Blue Light Card’s volunteer page lists the NHS, including its volunteers, among eligible organisations. Choose volunteer and NHS in the checker, and it says you may be eligible as long as accepted ID can be provided.

The NHS help page doesn’t say which ID a volunteer should use, though. Ask Blue Light Card support before you pay.

Student Discounts That Cost £0

Without a qualifying role, Health Service Discounts is the nearest thing to a Blue Light Card. It’s free to join and welcomes healthcare students as well as NHS, private, bank and retired staff.
