A Blue Light Card costs £4.99 for two years. That one payment gets you the digital card in the app and a plastic card in the post, and renewal costs the same £4.99.

There’s no monthly charge. You start each renewal yourself from your account, up to 30 days before the card expires.
The fee is easy to earn back. At the 3.5% Blue Light Card quotes for some supermarket Shopping Cards, about £143 of food shopping covers it.
£4.99 Buys Two Years
The £4.99 covers two years of access to Blue Light Card’s offers, which the company puts at more than 15,000 brand partners. Its terms describe the payment as an admin fee for processing your application.
You pay at the end of the application, once your job details are in. After approval, the digital card in the app is usually ready within an hour. The plastic card is posted within 3 to 5 working days and should arrive within 14 working days.
Spread over two years, the fee works out at about 21p a month, or roughly £2.50 a year. You need to be 16 or over and in an eligible job, and our guide on how to apply walks through each screen.
Blue Light Card doesn’t publish a list of payment methods for the membership fee. For comparison, its Shopping Card checkout takes UK debit and credit cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay, and turns away American Express, prepaid, business and non-UK cards.
Is a Blue Light Card Free?
Not unless your employer pays. Membership is £4.99 for everyone, and Blue Light Card says it can’t issue promo codes to individuals.
Membership promo codes come from employers, schools and approved organisations, which use them to put money towards the fee. If you have one, look for the Got a Promo Code box on the category page when you sign up or renew.
Bigger employers can cover the whole cost. Through its workforce scheme, organisations in eligible sectors with 250 or more staff can buy memberships in bulk, so staff don’t pay or upload ID. Care UK did this for its team. Smaller employers can’t use that route, but Blue Light Card suggests they reimburse the fee instead.

Discounts From 2% to 25%
What you save depends on the brand. Some offers are small. Apple’s is 2%, through a discounted Apple Shopping Card, and Blue Light Card quotes 3.5% for Shopping Cards at selected supermarkets.
Others go much further. B&M Shopping Cards save 5%, Wagamama takes 20% off food for the member and five guests, and a few restaurant chains, Bella Italia among them, reach 25%. Our restaurant guide lists the rates by chain.
Blue Light Card’s headline claim, that members could save £3,126 a year, assumes an average discount of 22% across its top 10% of offers. Treat it as a best case. Our guide to what the Blue Light Card is looks at that figure in more detail.
Break Even After £143 of Groceries
The fee has paid for itself once your savings pass £4.99. The lower the rate, the more you need to spend first.
Groceries are the steadiest route. Blue Light Card’s own savings estimate assumes a £112 weekly food shop and a 3.5% Shopping Card rate at selected grocers. That saves £3.92 a week, so the second weekly shop clears the fee. Over a year it comes to about £200, in line with Blue Light Card’s grocery figure.
Eating out gets there faster. At Wagamama’s 20% off food, a £25 food bill saves £5, which covers the fee in a single meal.
Big tech purchases work too, even at a low rate. Apple’s 2% card takes £17.98 off a £899 iPhone 17, more than three times the fee.

Lost Cards Cost Another £4.99
The membership fee is the main cost, but a few situations bring the same £4.99 charge back.

A replacement for a lost or stolen card restarts your two-year membership, so the money isn’t wasted. If a new card never arrives, report it within 90 days. After three months, the terms class it as lost and a new application costs £4.99.
Reprints after a name change cost £4.99 once you’re more than 90 days into a membership, so it can pay to wait for your next renewal. You can often skip a replacement altogether, because the digital card in the app keeps working unless you’ve marked the card as lost. Some shops still prefer to see the plastic card.
A 28 Day Refund Window
Changed your mind? You can ask for a refund within 28 days of the date your card was posted, which you’ll find in your dispatch email.
The two official sources set slightly different conditions. Blue Light Card’s help centre, updated on 6 October 2026, asks for a photo showing you’ve destroyed the plastic card. Its website terms say a refund needs the card back in its hands. Ask the support team which applies before you cut anything up.
Once a refund is approved, the money reaches your account within 5 to 10 days.
Before approval, the fee works differently. It stays valid for 12 months while you finish your application, and after that it’s non-refundable. If your ID is declined and you’d rather not carry on, the support team can help with a refund.
A Free Rival for Healthcare Staff
Health Service Discounts is free to join and free to use. It’s open to NHS, private and retired healthcare staff, plus healthcare students. It lists over 2,000 brands against Blue Light Card’s 15,000, so check whether the shops you use are on it.
Defence Discount Service is Blue Light Card’s sister scheme for the armed forces community. It costs £4.99 for five years, about £1 a year, and it covers groups Blue Light Card doesn’t, such as partners of serving personnel, cadets over 16 and NATO personnel in the UK.
If you’re serving or a veteran, you can join both Blue Light Card and Defence Discount Service, and the defence scheme works out cheaper per year.
Renewal Opens 30 Days Before Expiry
Renewal costs the same £4.99 for another two years. You can start up to 30 days before your card expires, or after it has already run out, through the same steps on Blue Light Card’s renewal page.
- Log in on the website or app and open Your Card. A yellow Renew Membership banner shows when renewal is open.
- Check your name, contact details and delivery address.
- Confirm your job, or change your status to Retired, and upload current proof.
- Pay the £4.99.
- Wait for the approval email. Your offers come back once you’re approved, and the new card follows by post.
Once you start, your offers are paused until your ID is approved, so don’t renew halfway through a big purchase. With everything ready, it takes about 10 minutes.
